Wait, No More State Inspections? (Why You Might Not Need an Emissions Test in College Station)

As of 2025, the State of Texas fundamentally changed the game. The mandatory Safety Inspection for non-commercial vehicles is dead. It has been replaced by a fee you pay directly to the state when you renew your registration online.

But here is where it gets tricky for Aggies and students living in Brazos County.

If your car is registered back home in a "Clean Air County" (like Harris, Travis, Dallas, Tarrant, Denton, etc.), the DMV computer system has a hold on your registration. It thinks you need an Emissions Test before you can renew your tags.

Since Brazos County does not require emissions testing, there are literally no machines here to do it.

Does this mean you have to drive 2+ hours back to Houston or Dallas just to get a sensor check?

No. You have a workaround, and most students don't know about it.

The "College Student" Loophole (The Affidavit)

The state acknowledges that cars registered in emissions counties might be driven primarily in non-emissions counties (like here in College Station) for school or work.

If you are currently living in Brazos County and your car isn't returning to your home county anytime soon, you can waive the emissions requirement by filing an Affidavit (Form VTR-270).

Here is how to handle your registration without leaving town:

1. Download Form VTR-270: This is the "Vehicle Identification Number Certification for Waiver of Vehicle Emissions."
2. Check the Box: Look for the section regarding vehicles located in a non-emissions county.
3. Submit with Renewal: When you mail in your renewal notice (or submit it to the local tax office), include this signed affidavit.

Note: This effectively tells the state, "My car lives in College Station right now, so it can't take the test."

"So, My Car Doesn't Need to be Checked... Ever?"

Just because the State doesn't require a safety inspection anymore doesn't mean Physics stopped applying to your car. The state isn't checking your bald tires, your grinding brakes, or your wipers anymore. That responsibility is now 100% on you.
